Communication Channels Question - PMP (Project Management)

Communication Channels Question - PMP
(Easy and Tough)

1. John is project manager project is interacting with six stakeholders. Three new stakeholders join
the project. How many new channels have been added?

 a. 15 channels
 b. 21 channels
 c. 24 channels
 d. 36 channels
Answer: B

The number of communication channels = n(n-1)/2  where n= number of stakeholders
In this question the project manager is interacting with six other stakeholders. Therefore there are
seven stakeholders.
The number of communication channels = 7(6)/2= 42/2= 21 channels.
Three new stakeholders join. Therefore there are now ten stakeholders.
The number of communication channels = 10(9)/2= 90/2= 45 channels.
So for 21 channels for seven people and now have 45 channels for ten people.
Therefore (45-21) =24 new channels have been added.
Hope this clear your concept.

Now will discuss on tough question

2. John is project manager project is interacting with six stakeholders. and now there are new 45
channels added for new stakeholders, What is total no of stakeholders in team now.

 a. 15 Stakeholders
 b. 21 Stakeholders
 c. 17 Stakeholders
 d. 36 Stakeholders
Ans: C

Method 1.
For this sort question how to find Stakeholders count from Channels
find multiplication number to 90 like
15*6 =90
18*5=90
10*9=90
But from above list find that both the multiplication number should next to each other
So 10*9 is right option , then for 45 Channels there are 10 is Stakeholder
Now existing 7 stakeholder including Manager + 10 new stakeholders = 17 Stakeholders

Method 2.
Check the each answer and match with channels(45) and find the solution
Eg. Total stakeholder are 7
eg. For 15 stakeholders = 15-7= 8 , 8*7/2= 28
eg. For 21 stakeholders = 21-7= 14, 14*13/2= 91
eg. For 17 stakeholders = 17-7= 10, 10*9/2= 45
eg. For 36 stakeholders = 36-7= 29, 36*35/2=630
So for 17 stakeholders Channels are 45 , Then your answer is C, Total 17 stakeholders

I have clear the concept both the ways.

Conflict management strategies

Conflict management strategies

Conflict is inevitable in a project environment. Sources of conflict include scarce resources,
scheduling priorities, and personal work styles. Team ground rules, group norms, and solid project
management practices, like communication planning and role definition, reduce the amount of
conflict.
Successful conflict management results in greater productivity and positive working relationships.
When managed properly,

There are five general techniques for resolving conflict. As each one has its place and use, these
are not given in any particular order:

Withdraw/Avoid. Retreating from an actual or potential conflict situation; postponing the issue to
be better prepared or to be resolved by others.

Smooth/Accommodate. Emphasizing areas of agreement rather than areas of difference; conceding one’s  position to the needs of others to maintain harmony and relationships.

Compromise/Reconcile. Searching for solutions that bring some degree of satisfaction to all parties
in order to temporarily or partially resolve the conflict.

Force/Direct. Pushing one’s viewpoint at the expense of others; offering only win-lose solutions,
usually enforced through a power position to resolve an emergency.

Collaborate/Problem Solve. Incorporating multiple viewpoints and insights from differing
perspectives; requires a cooperative attitude and open dialogue that typically leads to consensus
and commitment.

Effective communication vs Efficient communication

Effective communication vs Efficient communication

Effective communication means that the information is provided in the right format, at the right time, to the right audience, and with the right impact.

Efficient communication means providing only the information that is needed.
This statement make good sense ....

On Projects efficiency is like output matrices , like how many deliverable you produce in a given time , that is efficiency . While the effectiveness would be how useful thous deliverable were for the customer or end user.

Communication Methods vs Communication technology

There are 3 Communication Methods
Please find definition as describe below
• Interactive communication: Between two or more parties performing a multidirectional exchange
of information.
• Push communication. Sent to specific recipients who need to receive the information. This ensures
that the information is distributed but does not ensure that it actually reached or was understood by the
intended audience.
•Pull communication: Used for very large volumes of information, or for very large audiences, and
requires the recipients to access the communication content at their own discretion.

For Interactive communication we will use Communication technology as
Face to Face to Meetings, phone calls, instant messaging, video conferencing etc.

For Push communication we will use Communication technology as
Sending letters by courier, sending emails, faxes, sending voice mails etc.

For Push communication we will use Communication technology as
Intranet sites, e-learning, lessons learned databases, knowledge repositories, etc.

As per project requirement you have to select communication technology
Eg. For Interactive communication you want to record your conversion as evidence of meeting
then you can use instant messaging like yahoo chat or etc. where you can store this conversion in your record
